Macromedia Studio 8 is newer (2005) and is also the newest version of that product line. The Macromedia Studio has be purchased by and continued as Adobe Creative Suite. Many of the products in Adobe CS4 are the same / have the same purpose as those available in Macromedia Studio 8.
Either way, I have used Studio 8 and MX and greatly favor the interface and new features of Studio 8.
